A safer Oakland is built in more places than hospitals, schools, city offices, and neighborhood streets. It is built wherever people decide to learn from one another, share responsibility, and invest in the people closest to the work.
That is the heart of the 1200 Lakeshore story.
On Thursday, October 15, the McFadden Finch Foundation for Community Enrichment will host an informational reception with Youth ALIVE! at 1200 Lakeshore. The gathering will give residents, neighbors, and community partners a chance to learn how violence prevention works on the ground, from hospital bedside intervention to community mediation and youth leadership.
The point is not to pretend Oakland’s challenges are simple. They are not. The point is to understand that peace grows when neighbors know what is happening, who is doing the work, and how they can stand behind it.
A conversation that starts close to home
The reception will take place on the 4th Floor Terrace at 1200 Lakeshore, just steps from the daily lives of the people who call this area home. That setting matters. Community safety can feel like an abstract policy conversation until it reaches the places where people live, raise families, build businesses, and come home at night.
MFFCE’s work is rooted in this kind of local connection. Through its Safety and Justice focus area, the Foundation supports community-based leaders and organizations working toward measurable, long-term change.
Youth ALIVE! brings more than three decades of Oakland experience to that work. The organization launched in 1991, growing from youth-led violence prevention efforts into a broad public health and community intervention organization. Its programs connect prevention, mentorship, crisis response, healing, and advocacy. (Youth ALIVE! history and research) [1]

What neighbors are investing in
“Investing in neighbors” does not only mean writing a check, although sustained funding matters. It also means investing attention, trust, time, and belief.
Youth ALIVE!’s work shows what that looks like in practice:
- Violence interrupters mediate conflicts before they escalate. In 2025, Youth ALIVE! reported 260 community-based mediations in Oakland. (Youth ALIVE! impact data) [2]
- Hospital bedside safety assessments reach people at a critical moment after a shooting. Youth ALIVE! reported 131 such assessments in 2025. [2]
- Caught in the Crossfire, launched in the mid-1990s and widely recognized as the first hospital-based violence intervention program in the United States, connects survivors with practical support, trusted guidance, and pathways toward healing. (Hospital-based violence intervention history) [3]
- Teens on Target trains young people to become peer educators and leaders. Over time, the program has trained more than 900 peer educators who reached nearly 50,000 young people with violence prevention education. (Peer-reviewed case study) [1]
That last point deserves a pause. Young people are not simply recipients of safety programs. They are teachers, organizers, messengers, and problem-solvers. When a teenager helps another teenager think through conflict, the lesson carries a different kind of credibility. It sounds less like a lecture and more like someone saying, “I know this block. I know this pressure. Here is another way through.”
The numbers matter, but they are not the whole story
Oakland saw a 34% reduction in homicides and nonfatal shootings in 2024, according to the City of Oakland’s Ceasefire audit update. The city then recorded a further decline in homicides in 2025, reaching its lowest homicide total in decades. (City of Oakland Ceasefire audit update) [4] (City of Oakland public safety update) [5]
Those figures are encouraging. They are also not proof that the work is finished.
Statistics tell us what changed. They do not fully explain the people who made change possible: the mediator who stepped into a tense situation, the youth leader who kept showing up, the hospital intervention specialist who helped a survivor imagine a future beyond retaliation, or the neighbor who decided to learn instead of look away.
Peace is not a single intervention. It is an ecosystem of relationships.
Why gathering at 1200 Lakeshore matters
A reception may sound modest compared with the scale of violence prevention. Honestly, that is part of its strength.
Most community trust is built in ordinary rooms, over shared food, during questions that do not fit neatly into a brochure. The October 15 gathering creates a place for people to hear directly from Youth ALIVE!, ask practical questions, and understand how violence prevention operates across Oakland.
It also creates room for neighbors to recognize their own role. A resident may know a young person who needs mentorship. A small business owner may want to support safer commercial corridors. A nonprofit leader may see a partnership opportunity. A donor may be looking for a community-rooted organization to support. None of those roles is decorative. Each one adds another strand to the social fabric.

The presentation will explain Youth ALIVE!’s violence interruption, hospital-based intervention, youth leadership, mentorship, and healing work. Guests will also have time to ask questions during the community discussion.
Is this a fundraiser?
The event is primarily informational and community-centered. It is designed to help attendees understand the work and explore ways to support safer, healthier neighborhoods.
