The McFadden Finch Foundation is committed to supporting rural communities across the Bay Area that face the same deep challenges as urban neighborhoods—historic disinvestment, economic exclusion, and limited access to core services.
Our Rural MFF strategy focuses on areas often overlooked in regional funding conversations: agricultural corridors, unincorporated towns, and small rural communities just beyond Oakland’s urban center. These places are rich in culture, labor, history, and resilience—and they deserve the same investment and attention.
Why Rural Matters
Rural communities in the Bay Area face unique barriers:
- Fewer public services and transportation options
- Gaps in internet access and infrastructure
- Limited access to arts, youth programming, and culturally competent care
- Disconnection from large-scale philanthropy and funding networks
We bring the same values—trust, equity, and long-term commitment—to rural partnerships as we do in Oakland neighborhoods.
Our Rural Focus Areas
- Economic development for rural entrepreneurs and small farms
- Youth empowerment and education access in underserved school districts
- Cultural preservation in migrant and Indigenous communities
- Capacity building for rural grassroots groups and local nonprofits
- Infrastructure investment in rural health, housing, and digital access

Where We Work
While our headquarters are in Oakland, our rural engagement includes:
- Unincorporated East Bay communities
- Agricultural towns within Alameda and Contra Costa counties
- Migrant and seasonal worker hubs
- Community-led initiatives along regional transit corridors and farmworker routes
